Poetry Corner #12: I Can Stand the Rain
Sometimes when it rains, it pours... but it helps to write it all out of your system.
The 500 days of January are finally over. I must admit I doubted once or twice whether the month would last forever, but I scrolled ahead in my phone’s calendar, and I remembered having this feeling back in 2023. So it must be: the first month of the year always lasts a lifetime. Maybe even more so for me since I decided to take a break from Social Media for an entire month. First time I’ve ever done this since joining Facebook in 2007. For the record, I have been off Facebook for a couple of years now, only checking it once or twice a year (on my birthday and when a family member who still uses it sends me something). My vice of choice these days is Instagram, and 31 days without it was a peculiar experience. You can read more about that tomorrow.
But enough of that, and enough of January. With the new month, comes a new poem.
Today’s poem, “I Can Stand the Rain” can seem like a sad poem at first. It’s a poem about feelings of sorrow and loneliness. It’s a reminder to some of us that when it rains, it pours. We string together a few bad days, and before we know it, the’ve become a few bad weeks, or months. But for me, this poem is a reminder that bad days can and will pass. That there is calm after the storm, and that there will be periods in our lives where we will be able to stand the rain for what it is: rain.
If you are experiencing one of these dark periods, I hope you see a glimmer of hope in this poem. I wrote it after a storm and realized, once again, that writing it all out of my system was cathartic and therapeutic. Enjoy.
